Ego v. Being

I am he, the first and the last. The call goes out to Jacob, to a people scattered in their thoughts, and turns them back toward something with no beginning and no end. One presence stays behind every changing face.

A person spends his days inside time, chasing what is next and grieving what is gone. Yet the awareness in which all of that appears was here before the first thought and will remain after the last. To hear this call is to remember what you already are beneath the noise. The bare sense that you exist is older than any story you tell about yourself.

Sufism

Ghafla: Heedlessness Ghafla is the drifting that nobody decides on. Someone can keep every habit, keep the name they were given, and still stop attending to who gave it. Being addressed by name cuts through the fog, and attention comes back the moment a person turns and listens.

Jadhba: The pull that comes from God's side Jadhba means the pull starts on God's side. A person can spend years assuming the whole thing began with their own searching and their own good behavior. Hearing themselves called by a name they did not pick puts the start somewhere else, earlier than any effort of theirs. The weight of holding the relationship together eases, because it was never being held only from below.

Tawḥīd: Oneness Tawhid names the recognition that one power stands behind everything, with nothing beside it. Most people agree in theory while quietly keeping backups: a plan, a person, a bit of luck they half credit. A statement that admits no partner presses on those backups, since it leaves them nowhere to sit. Divided trust wears a person out, and tawhid lets it settle into one.

He was, and nothing was with Him: nothing else shares the beginning A saying of the Prophet reaches back to before anything at all existed. Junayd added that God is now exactly as He was then, which keeps it from being ancient history. Anyone measuring their own start against that finds it small and late, dependent from the first moment. Whatever came into being afterward, including the person hearing this, came from there and still leans on it.

Al-Awwal wa al-Ākhir: The First and the Last Al-Awwal and al-Akhir are two of God's names in the Quran, set side by side in one line. Ibn Arabi treats them as the two ends of everything, so no part of a life falls outside them. Someone stuck in the middle of an unfinished stretch, unsure how it turns out, learns the ending belongs to the one who opened it. The part a person can see is short, and both ends of it are already held.

Live Isaiah 48:12 today

  1. Before the first scroll of the morning, sit for one minute and just feel that you exist. No thoughts about your day, only the plain fact of being here.
  2. Next time someone asks what you do, answer, then quietly remember to yourself that this is a job, not the thing that is alive in you.
  3. In traffic or a long line, when the mind jumps forward to what is next, come back to the breath in your chest right now. That breathing is older than the schedule.

Underneath everything I did today, what was simply here the whole time?

There was something formless and complete before heaven and earth. It has no name, and it was already here.

Beneath the thinking, the feeling and the remembering, there is a bare awareness that was never born and does not end. You are that, not the passing contents.

A teacher asks for your face before your parents were born. The question points at what you already are under every story about yourself.
