Isaiah 54:17 · World English Bible

Isaiah 54:17 Meaning No Weapon That Is Formed Against You

No weapon that is formed against you will prevail; and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of Yahweh’s servants, and their righteousness is of me,” says Yahweh.

What does Isaiah 54:17 mean?

The sharpest weapons aimed at a person are the accusing voices, and the sharpest of those speaks from inside his own head. A settled self-image disarms them.

Cybernetics

The sharpest weapons aimed at a person are the accusing voices, and the sharpest of those speaks from inside his own head. A settled self-image disarms them. The insult that would have wounded a shrinking man lands on a steady one and simply falls.

Such attacks will not finally prosper against someone whose worth is not on loan from the crowd. His standing does not come from winning the argument. Worth like that is granted, an inheritance held from a source higher than any critic. A man rooted in that given worth answers every hostile tongue by refusing to hand it the last word.

Live Isaiah 54:17 today

  1. Catch the voice in your own head tonight that talks to you worse than any stranger would. Answer it once, out loud, with something true, then stop arguing with it.
  2. When someone comes at you sideways in a text, wait before replying. Your worth is not what is being decided in that thread, so you can answer slowly or not at all.
  3. In the performance review, the critical email, the public correction, take the part that is useful and refuse to let the rest set the terms of who you are.

Who have I been letting have the last word about me?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

No one can harm you without your help. The insult becomes an injury only at the moment you pick it up and carry it.

Buddhism

The Buddha, insulted at length, asked what becomes of a gift the receiver declines. The hostile word stays with the one who offered it.

Sufism · Rumi

What you are was given, not earned in the marketplace. No one who did not grant your worth has the standing to take it back.
