Isaiah 55:2 · World English Bible

Isaiah 55:2 Meaning Why Do You Spend Money

Why do you spend money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which doesn’t satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in richness.

What does Isaiah 55:2 mean?

When a purchase keeps failing to satisfy, the problem is the vehicle, not the size of the hunger. Money and working years always go toward meeting a need, and the trouble starts when the need is certainty or significance and the thing bought was never built to carry it.

When a purchase keeps failing to satisfy, the problem is the vehicle, not the size of the hunger.

Money and working years always go toward meeting a need, and the trouble starts when the need is certainty or significance and the thing bought was never built to carry it. Satisfaction does not come out, the emptiness gets read as insufficient quantity, so more goes in, and that loop is what a spent decade is made of.

Listening diligently is a change of vehicle, not a change of appetite. What is called good here feeds the needs of the spirit, growth and contribution, and those give back more than was put into them. Keep paying into the needs of the personality and the richness the soul was built for never arrives, and the years spent proving it are gone.

Live Isaiah 55:2 today

  1. Look at the last three things you bought that you did not need. Ask what you were actually hoping they would fix, and name it honestly to yourself.
  2. Spend one hour today on a person instead of a purchase. Call the friend, sit with your kid, help someone carry something. That hour pays back in a way the cart never does.
  3. When you are tired or stung and your thumb goes to the shopping app or the fridge or the feed, pause for sixty seconds and ask what you are really hungry for. Then go get the real thing if you can.

What have you been buying over and over because it never quite works?

The more you pile up, the more there is to lose. Know what is enough and nothing can take it from you.

Buddhism · the second noble truth

Suffering grows out of craving, and craving is not fixed by feeding it. Each thing you get quiets the hunger for an hour, then hands it back bigger.

It is not the poor man who has little, but the man who wants more. Wealth that cannot satisfy you at any amount was never wealth to begin with.
