Isaiah 58:10 · World English Bible
and if you pour out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will rise in darkness, and your obscurity will be as the noonday;
When you truly give yourself to another, meeting the hungry and the afflicted not as a role you play but with your whole presence, something shifts in you. For a moment the ego, with its endless concern for itself, is set aside.

EGO & BEING
When you truly give yourself to another, meeting the hungry and the afflicted not as a role you play but with your whole presence, something shifts in you. For a moment the ego, with its endless concern for itself, is set aside. In genuine giving, the self that always wants is quietly forgotten.
And in that forgetting your own light rises. The darkness in you is only unconsciousness, the mind turned in on its own problems. When your attention flows outward in compassion, that inner gloom clears like night giving way to noon. This is why serving another heals you: it lifts you out of the small self and lets your own light shine.

SUFISM
Many who fast gain nothing from it but hunger and thirst: the outward act can come up empty The Prophet said this about people whose fasting left them unchanged. Someone can keep every rule of a hard practice and still be cold toward the person standing next to them. Going without is meant to loosen your grip on yourself, and if the grip stays tight, the hunger was only hunger.
Īthār: Putting others ahead of yourself Sufis use this word for giving away what you need yourself. Handing over a spare coin costs little; handing over your own dinner, or your evening when you are worn out, costs you something. The step from the first to the second is where a person changes, because you cannot take it while still keeping yourself at the center.
You would have found Me with him: God is met in the person who is hungry A saying handed down from the Prophet has God asking for food and being turned away, in the person of someone who asked. That changes who you think is in front of you when someone needs something. Feeding that person becomes a meeting with God, not only a kindness done for a neighbor.
Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity The word names doing something for God alone. Help given so that others see you helping slowly turns into a performance, and the person being helped can usually feel it. When nobody is watching and you would do the same thing anyway, the act belongs to God and to the person.
Nūr: Light Al-Ghazali wrote a whole book, the Niche of Lights, on light as the name for God's presence in a heart. He compared the heart to a mirror: the image goes dim when the surface dulls, and cleaning it changes nothing about the light itself. Caring for people over a long stretch is one of the things that cleans it, so the change arrives as seeing more clearly than before.

SELF-HELP
The fastest exit from private suffering runs through somebody else's need, and no amount of self-examination finds it.
Self-focus is the manufacturing plant behind most private darkness. The mind reviews its own case, the review sets the state, the state sets the emotion, and the emotion decides what happens with the next hour. Pouring a soul out on a hungry person takes over the exact faculty that review was running on.
Yahweh is not paying for good behavior here. He is describing what happens inside someone whose focus has moved off themselves and stayed there. A person who keeps the focus at home can stand in full noon and see nothing, still waiting on conditions to lift what only contribution lifts.
Ego v. Being lens
Whose need have you been too busy with yourself to see?
Wish another person well with your whole attention and the wishing changes you first. Compassion is not a cost, it is a release.
If I am only for myself, what am I? A life turned entirely inward is a small and airless place.
The sage gives without depleting. What flows outward through an open hand never empties the hand.
