For, behold, darkness will cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but Yahweh will arise on you, and his glory shall be seen on you.

What does Isaiah 60:2 mean?

Ego v. Being

Look honestly at the world and you see a deep unconsciousness covering it, a collective darkness in which people move as if asleep, driven by fear and wanting, causing suffering without knowing why. This is the gross darkness upon the people. It is real, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

Yet darkness has no power to prevent light. In the midst of it, presence can arise in a single human being like a rising sun. When you awaken from the dream of the thinking mind, consciousness itself begins to shine through you. This is the glory seen upon you: not something you achieve or display, but the natural radiance of a person who has become present while the world around them still sleeps.

SUFISM

Sufism

The darkness here is not only the world's night but the film of pride and heedlessness that dulls the inner eye. A person can sit in that fog for years, mistaking it for how things are, blaming the world for a blindness that is really the heart's own rust.

The light that will rise is not made by the one it shines on; it dawns the way morning fills a window only turned toward it. The cure is that turning. Then a worn face becomes the place where a borrowed glory is seen.

Live Isaiah 60:2 today

  1. Before you open the news or your feed, sit for one minute doing nothing. Then read it from that steadiness instead of letting it set your mood for the day.
  2. When a group chat turns into pile-on or outrage, be the one who stays warm. You do not have to lecture anyone, just answer like a person who is not afraid.
  3. In a tense meeting where everyone is defending themselves, feel your feet on the floor and speak slowly. Calm in one body in the room changes the room more than the best argument.

Where today could my steadiness be the most useful thing I bring?

Dhammapada

One awake person among the sleeping is like someone with eyes open in the dark. Their clarity takes nothing from anyone, it simply ends the stumbling.

Tao Te Ching 22

The sage does not shine by display. Because they are not competing for brightness, their light is the one that lasts.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He wrote that you cannot stop the world from behaving badly, but you can stop joining it. Be good quietly, and that is answer enough.
