We have honored the children of Adam: worth comes as a gift The Quran states this plainly, with no conditions attached. Someone who has been overlooked for years starts hunting for proof that they count for something. Being valued by someone whose judgment settles the matter ends that hunt, because the valuing never hung on how well they were doing.

Faqr: Poverty before God Faqr names owning nothing on your own, since the Quran calls people needy before God and God the rich one. A person told they are precious often turns straight to worrying about how to keep that standing. Under faqr the keeping was never their job, so the worth stays steady because it rests on the giver.

Jamāl: Beauty Jamāl means beauty, and the Prophet said that God is beautiful and loves beauty. Hearing that you are lovely can swell into pride, or it can feel like a claim you now have to live up to. When the beauty counts as borrowed, both reactions settle, since a person can enjoy something good in themselves without having to be its source.

Tajallī: God showing himself Tajallī is God making himself visible through something. Ibn Arabi compares creation to a mirror, and a heart cleaned of its own smudges is where God's beauty finally shows. Being singled out then feels less like a prize to guard and more like a clean window letting light into a room.

Khilāfa: Standing in for God Khilāfa is the rank the Quran gives people as God's stewards on earth. Any honor that carries authority raises the question of what that authority is for. Under khilāfa the rank arrives with someone else's purposes attached, closer to a job a person is trusted with than a trophy they won.

Live Isaiah 62:3 today

  1. Today, when you find yourself quietly tallying whether you matter, from likes, replies, or who got invited to the call, name the tally out loud and set it down. Your worth was not up for a vote this morning and it is not up for one now.
  2. Tell someone close to you a plain sentence about why you value them, one that has nothing to do with what they produce or how well they are doing this month. Say it when nothing is going on, not as a response to something they did.
  3. When you are passed over at work, left off an email, or someone takes credit for your thinking, feel it and then skip the campaign to prove yourself. The person whose judgment actually settles this already made the call.

If you stopped collecting evidence that you count, what would you do with the free hours?

The sage does not display himself and so is seen clearly, does not insist on himself and so is trusted. Worth that does not have to be argued for stops needing defense.

Epictetus taught that the one thing nobody can take from you is also the one thing no office, status, or applause gave you. Standing built on other people's scorekeeping rises and falls with them.

The sages taught that whoever runs after honor finds honor running away, and whoever flees from it finds it following. The chase is what empties the thing being chased.
