Isaiah 62:4 Meaning You Will Not Be Called Forsaken Any

You will not be called Forsaken any more, nor will your land be called Desolate any more; but you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for Yahweh delights in you, and your land will be married.

What does Isaiah 62:4 mean?

A label that was once true about your life is the most dangerous one to keep answering to. God hands out the new terms while the ruins are still standing, because the condition follows the naming rather than the other way around.

A label that was once true about your life is the most dangerous one to keep answering to.

God hands out the new terms while the ruins are still standing, because the condition follows the naming rather than the other way around. Forsaken described something real, and that accuracy is what let it harden into an identity instead of passing as a season; a people who define themselves as abandoned read every delay as confirmation, feel what abandoned people feel, and move like nobody is coming.

Delight is the source of the new term, which grounds the identity in someone else's commitment rather than in the evidence available on a given morning, and that is why it holds while the land still looks the same. Stay consistent with Desolate and rebuilding feels absurd before it is attempted, so it is never attempted, and the ground goes on proving the old word right.

Live Isaiah 62:4 today

  1. Write down the word you use about yourself when no one is listening, the lazy one, the broken one, the one nobody picks. Then ask whether it is a fact or just an old description you kept answering to.
  2. The next time someone casually hands you the old label, in the family joke or the group chat, let it go by without agreeing with it. You do not have to argue, just stop signing for it.
  3. Today, do one thing the new name would do, while the old evidence is still sitting there. Start the rebuild on the ground that still looks ruined, because it looks absurd right up until it is underway.

What name have you been living up to that stopped being true a while ago?

The old name is a borrowed coat. You can set it down, and setting it down is not a lie about where you have been.

The treasure is buried under the ruined house, which is why the ruin is worth standing in. What looks like the end of the place is the reason anyone digs there.
