James 1:13 Meaning Let No Man Say When He Is

Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.

What does James 1:13 mean?

Name God as the author of your pull and you hand away the only lever you were ever holding. Where a man assigns the source of his own pull decides how much power he keeps.

Self-Help

Name God as the author of your pull and you hand away the only lever you were ever holding.

Where a man assigns the source of his own pull decides how much power he keeps. Call it God's doing and focus swings upward, the meaning becomes design, and the third decision, what to do about it, never gets made, because nothing can be done about the architecture of the universe. A God who cannot be tempted is a God who cannot be blamed, which leaves the pull with an address, and the address is a man's own wanting.

Dropping the attribution costs the comfort of calling an appetite the will of heaven. What replaces it is workable: a desire with an owner can be aimed elsewhere, and the pain and pleasure wired to it can be rebuilt on purpose.

Live James 1:13 today

  1. Next time you catch yourself saying "I can't help it, it's just how I'm wired," stop and rephrase it as "I want this, and I'm choosing what to do with it." Same feeling, completely different amount of room to move.
  2. With one person today, drop the passive version when you explain something you did. Instead of "the day got away from me" or "something came over me," say what you actually wanted in that moment. It will feel exposed for about four seconds and honest after that.
  3. When the pressure hits, the late email, the sharp comment in the group chat, the urge to check out on your phone, name the want out loud or under your breath before you act. "I want to feel better right now." Owning it is what lets you aim it somewhere else.

Where have you been calling something fate when it was really just something you wanted?

Epictetus · Discourses

Some things are up to us and some are not, and nearly all suffering comes from treating what is ours as if it belonged to the gods. The pull you feel is in the first category, which is the good news.

Dhammapada

Craving is not sent to you from outside. It rises in you, and because it rises in you, it can end in you.

If I am not for myself, who will be? Heaven is not holding the lever on your own wanting.
