James 1:26 Meaning If Anyone Among You Thinks Himself

If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless.

What does James 1:26 mean?

A person can keep every outward form and still let the tongue run loose, and the loose tongue tells the truth about the heart the way a stream tells the truth about its spring. The self-deceit is mistaking the show for the substance.

Sufism

A person can keep every outward form and still let the tongue run loose, and the loose tongue tells the truth about the heart the way a stream tells the truth about its spring. The self-deceit is mistaking the show for the substance. The cure is small and daily: hold the tongue, and let honest silence do what empty words cannot.

Speech is where the hidden self steps into the open, and God is present in that crossing. What leaves the mouth is offered up whether one means it or not, so guarding it becomes its own kind of worship.

Live James 1:26 today

  1. Go one day without saying anything about a person who is not in the room. When you catch the sentence forming, let it go and see what you had wanted it to do for you.
  2. In the group chat or at dinner, when the easy laugh is available at someone's expense, skip it. The gap will feel strange for a second and then nobody will miss it.
  3. When someone embarrasses you in front of others, hold the comeback. Silence there is not weakness, it is the only answer that does not cost you something later.

If someone played back everything you said today, what would they say your heart is full of?

Tao Te Ching 56

The one who knows keeps the mouth shut; the one who talks on and on has not arrived. Closing the gate is itself part of the practice.

Pirkei Avot

Silence was called a fence around wisdom, a wall that keeps what is inside from leaking out cheaply. Say little and do much.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Keep quiet mostly, and when you speak, keep it short. The spring tells you what the water is; the talk tells people what you are.
