James 2:1 Meaning My Brothers

My brothers, don’t hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.

What does James 2:1 mean?

Favoritism and faith cannot be held at once. Sorting people by their clothes, their money, or their usefulness is a judgment about who counts, and anyone who counts at all was worth dying for, which settles the ranking permanently.

"Respect of persons" means treating a face as a price tag, and it is a habit before it is ever a decision, which is why it has to be watched. The Lord of glory arrived poor and was buried in a borrowed grave, so a Church that seats the well dressed near the front and the shabby near the door has not slipped on manners; it has quietly stopped believing what it claims.

Live James 2:1 today

  1. Catch the first judgment you make about a stranger's clothes or car or accent today, and simply let it drop without arguing with yourself. It is a reflex, and reflexes can be retrained.
  2. Give your full attention and your actual name to the person whose job makes them easy to ignore, the cashier, the cleaner, the one on the phone line. Ask one human question and wait for the answer.
  3. In the meeting, back the quiet person's point and say it is theirs. Then watch what you do when the useful person and the awkward person both need you, and choose the awkward one once.

Whose face have I been reading as a price tag?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · the founding of the sangha

The community took in beggars and princes on the same terms, dropping caste at the door. Rank was treated as a fiction the practice could simply leave behind.

Stoicism · Epictetus, himself a former slave

The accidents of birth, money and status say nothing about the worth of the mind inside a person. Judging by those is a confusion about what a human being actually is.

Sufism · the ethic of service in the tekke

The guest is served without asking who they are or what they can give back. Status is left at the threshold with the shoes.
