James 5:16 · World English Bible
Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.
Confession here runs sideways, to another believer who can then pray holding the honest version, and saying it out loud costs what a private admission never does. The praying goes both directions, each person carrying the other's failure to God, and the healing that follows is His to give.

PROTESTANT
Confession here runs sideways, to another believer who can then pray holding the honest version, and saying it out loud costs what a private admission never does. The praying goes both directions, each person carrying the other's failure to God, and the healing that follows is His to give.
The power promised belongs to prayer God is driving, not prayer that is loud, and such praying accomplishes a great deal. A righteous man carries no special rank; anyone God counts right with Him through trusting Christ answers to that description, which sets this praying within reach of ordinary people.

CATHOLIC
Sin spoken aloud to another person loses the power it had while hidden. That is the logic behind confessing to a priest rather than only to God in private: healing comes through a human voice speaking the words of pardon, because grace reaches us through bodies and speech, the way it always has.
Praying for each other works the same way. Asking those already close to God to pray for us is not a detour around him but the ordinary shape of a family, and holiness in one person genuinely does work in another. That work lands whether or not the person prayed for ever hears about it.

ORTHODOX
Sin works like an infection that thrives in the dark, and saying it out loud to another person is the first cut that lets it drain. Healing, not merely a clean record, is what comes of it. This is why the tradition keeps confession spoken and heard rather than settled privately inside a person's own head.
The prayer that moves things is offered by someone whose life has been reshaped by God, and such people are not rare or far away. Others can carry what a person cannot yet carry alone, which makes belonging to a praying community part of the cure itself.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
A wrong kept secret works like a slow poison. It walls a person off, splitting the face they show from the part they hide, and in the dark that part only grows heavier. Saying it aloud to another person breaks the isolation, and once the thing is seen by someone who does not look away, it loses its grip.
To pray for someone is to hold them in steady, caring attention, and a whole person gives that attention real weight. So healing comes because a burden carried alone cuts you off from others, and a burden shared brings you back among them, where you can heal.

CYBERNETICS
A fault kept secret festers, because the self-image seals it in the dark and spends daily energy guarding the door. Spoken aloud to someone safe, the same fault loses its grip, and the tension a person burned holding it drains away.
Healing follows that opening. What was hidden turns ordinary once it is shared, and the mind, no longer defending a wound, is free to mend. The promise is that people mend one another this way, and a heartfelt wish held firmly for another carries a force of its own. When a person confesses and is met with care instead of scorn, the picture repairs, and the healing that was promised takes hold.

SELF-HELP
A person who keeps asking why they hurt stays sick; a person who starts asking for someone else begins to heal.
Attention runs in one place at a time, and wherever it lands sets the state a person lives in. Kept secret, a fault gets rehearsed on a private loop, shame sets the emotion, the emotion drives hiding, and hiding compounds into a life that keeps shrinking. Anything not growing is dying, and a fault sealed off from everyone stops moving.
Said out loud to another and then carried to God on that person's behalf, attention moves off the wound onto a need that is not one's own, and it cannot do both at once. Insistence multiplies it, because a focus repeated becomes a default. The cost is exact: a person stays the only subject of their own prayers, and stays exactly where they were the day they chose to handle it alone.
Protestant lens
What am I keeping private because I would rather manage it than be helped with it?
The confession on the Day of Atonement is spoken aloud, in the plural, by the whole community standing together. Guilt is named in company, not privately managed.
Twice a month monks gather to confess their breaches openly to one another before the community. Saying it in front of someone is treated as part of the repair.
Sufi practice puts the seeker under a guide who knows their actual faults, because a person cannot see their own blind spots and will not correct what stays hidden.
