BUDDHISM
Saddhā: Confidence Trust placed for reasons, the kind that moves a person to act. The one on the bed is too weak to summon it, since fever narrows a mind down to its own aching, so it is carried in by those kneeling beside him. Like trusting a doctor because you have watched other patients walk out well, this leaning is what makes the asking possible at all.
Paritta: Protective recitation Words said aloud over someone who is suffering. When the Buddha himself lay ill, a friend recited the factors of awakening at his side and he rose from that sickness; chanting at a sickbed has gone on ever since. The sound does part of the work, giving a mind that has been circling its pain something steady to rest on, and the body follows where the mind eases.
Kalyāṇamitta: Good friend The companion who holds up your practice when your own hands are full. Illness shrinks the world down to one room, and the sick man is going nowhere, so the elders are sent for and they come to him. Ānanda once guessed that good friendship was half of the holy life; the Buddha corrected him and said it is the whole of it.
Accaya-desanā: Owning a fault out loud Naming a transgression as a transgression in front of another person. A sick man often carries something he has told no one, and it presses on him heavier than the fever does, which is why the sins are raised at the bedside and not left for later. In the old training such a fault is spoken plainly, heard without drama, and met with a promise of restraint ahead; the matter is then closed.
Avippaṭisāra: Ease of a clear conscience The settled state of a person with nothing left hidden. Being raised up starts here: gladness comes first to the one who has been forgiven, then calm, then a body finally able to rest instead of bracing. Regret works like a splinter you keep pressing on; pull it out and the wound can close on its own.
