Jeremiah 18:2 Meaning Arise

“Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words.”

What does Jeremiah 18:2 mean?

The potter is your own imagination, and the potter's house is your own inner being, the wheel of thought where every state is shaped. To go down to that house is to turn attention inward, to the place where the self is actually made.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The potter is your own imagination, and the potter's house is your own inner being, the wheel of thought where every state is shaped. To go down to that house is to turn attention inward, to the place where the self is actually made. The clay is you, the self-concept, and it can be reworked when it comes out spoiled, pressed back into a better form by the same hands that shaped it before.

Hearing the words happens there and nowhere else. What you assume about yourself on that wheel is what you are creating, so a person is never stuck with the shape others have described or the shape a bad day left behind. The image held within is the mold the outer life pours into. A spoiled state is not thrown away. It is worked again, quietly, until it takes the form you choose, and the life around you slowly hardens into that new shape.

Live Jeremiah 18:2 today

  1. Somewhere quiet today, describe yourself the way you would like to be true, in plain present words, and sit in it for a few minutes. Do not argue with it.
  2. When someone sums you up today, pleasantly or not, let their version pass without taking it on. Return to your own.
  3. After a day that leaves you feeling small, do not go to bed in that shape. Spend two minutes before sleep in the self you would rather be, and let that be the last thing you held.

What shape of myself have I been accepting as final?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Upanishads

As a person conceives himself, so he becomes. The inner image is the mold the outer life takes.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

We are shaped by our own thoughts, and we become what we think. The self you live in was made, which means it can be made again.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Turn inward, because the quiet place in you is always available and that is where your life is actually decided.
