Jeremiah 23:17 Meaning They Say Continually to Those Who Despise

They say continually to those who despise me, ‘Yahweh has said, “You will have peace;” ’ and to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart they say, ‘No evil will come on you.’

What does Jeremiah 23:17 mean?

Beware the comforting voice that promises peace to a mind still lost in its own imaginings. It says no harm will come, all will be well, and it asks nothing of you.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Beware the comforting voice that promises peace to a mind still lost in its own imaginings. It says no harm will come, all will be well, and it asks nothing of you. This is the counterfeit calm that lets you stay asleep inside your own thoughts.

Real peace is never a promise about tomorrow. It cannot be spoken over a mind that still chases every craving and fantasy, because that restlessness is itself the absence of peace. Genuine stillness comes only when you stop feeding those imaginings and become present, not when a voice guarantees your future will be safe.

  1. When you find yourself scrolling for one more opinion that says everything will be fine, close the app and sit for a minute with not knowing. The calm you want is on this side of the answer.
  2. When a friend is anxious, resist the easy it will all work out. Try: I do not know how this goes, and I am here. That is truer, and it lands better.
  3. In the middle of a stressful day, drop the running forecast for ten seconds and feel your feet, your breath, the sounds in the room. That is the only peace that is actually available, and it is available now.

Are you looking for stillness, or just for someone to promise you it turns out well?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

There is no peace for a mind that still runs after every craving. Reassurance does not quiet it, only seeing it does.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not ask that things turn out as you wish. Peace that depends on a guarantee about tomorrow is not peace, it is waiting.

Tao Te Ching 81

True words are not pretty and pretty words are not true. The comfortable saying is often the one that asks nothing of you.
