Jeremiah 31:21 Meaning Set Up Road Signs

Set up road signs. Make guideposts. Set your heart toward the highway, even the way by which you went. Turn again, virgin of Israel. Turn again to these your cities.

What does Jeremiah 31:21 mean?

What a person makes visible becomes what they can still believe, and belief is what walks them home. Whatever a person keeps in the frame grows in size and in feeling, and whatever falls outside it stops existing for them.

What a person makes visible becomes what they can still believe, and belief is what walks them home.

Whatever a person keeps in the frame grows in size and in feeling, and whatever falls outside it stops existing for them. Memory alone will not hold a road across a generation in a foreign country, so the road gets driven into the ground where the eyes cannot delete it. Markers keep the belief alive that a return is intended, and belief sets the state, and the state decides whether tomorrow feels like survival or preparation.

Turning again is a decision made long before the feet move, and guideposts are what keep resignation from passing for realism. Without them the heart sets itself toward whatever is nearest and loudest, and a person builds a permanent life inside a temporary place.

Live Jeremiah 31:21 today

  1. Write the thing you actually want on something you cannot scroll past. A sticky note on the mirror, your phone's lock screen, a card in your wallet. Make it visible, not remembered.
  2. Tell one person out loud what you are heading toward, and ask them to say it back to you in a month. A promise with a witness stays alive longer than one you keep in your head.
  3. When today feels like nothing but getting through it, put one marker down anyway. Send the email, save the ten dollars, make the call. Small, dated, real.

What you turn over in your mind again and again becomes the shape of your mind. Guard what you keep in front of you, because that is what you will become.
