Jeremiah 5:21 Meaning Hear This Now

‘Hear this now, foolish people without understanding, who have eyes, and don’t see, who have ears, and don’t hear:

What does Jeremiah 5:21 mean?

Eyes that see not, ears that hear not. The senses work perfectly, yet perception is blocked, because a screen of thought stands between you and the living world.

Ego v. Being

Eyes that see not, ears that hear not. The senses work perfectly, yet perception is blocked, because a screen of thought stands between you and the living world. The mind labels each thing and then meets only its own label, never the reality in front of it.

This is not a curse laid upon anyone. It is the ordinary sleep of a mind so full of its own noise that the alive presence of the moment cannot reach it. When thinking quiets, seeing and hearing return, and you meet what is actually there for the first time.

Live Jeremiah 5:21 today

  1. Look at one ordinary thing today, your own hands, a tree on your street, the sky out the window, for thirty seconds longer than usual. Let it stop being the word for itself.
  2. With someone you see every day, a partner, a coworker, a barista, look at their actual face instead of the file you keep on them. Ask one question you do not already know the answer to.
  3. In a meeting or a group chat, hold off on the opinion that is already fully formed in your head and let yourself be surprised by what is really being said. The label got there before you did.

Who or what have you stopped actually seeing because you already know what it is?

Tao Te Ching 1

The name is not the thing. Once you have named it you tend to stop looking at it.
