Jeremiah 6:13 · World English Bible
For from their least even to their greatest, everyone is given to covetousness. From the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.
Abhijjhā: Covetousness Leaning toward what sits in another's hand and wanting it in your own. "Given to" points out which way the ownership runs: the wanting has them, the way a debtor belongs to his lender, and the grain or the silver is only what it happens to be aimed at.

BUDDHISM
Abhijjhā: Covetousness Leaning toward what sits in another's hand and wanting it in your own. "Given to" points out which way the ownership runs: the wanting has them, the way a debtor belongs to his lender, and the grain or the silver is only what it happens to be aimed at. Least and greatest differ in what they can reach for, never in the reaching itself, which is why the count runs the whole length of the ladder without finding a gap.
Anusaya: The Latent Tendency Greed lying dormant in an ordinary mind, waiting for its occasion. Counting from the smallest household to the greatest and turning up no exception points to something already asleep in each of them, which a hard season and an army on the northern road simply woke. The neighbor who has stolen nothing is often a person who has not yet been squeezed hard enough to find out.
Musāvāda: False Speech Saying what you know to be otherwise. "Deals falsely" is a market word, and it holds: a lie gets handed over like a bad coin, taken in good faith, spent again on the next person down the street. Once every hand in the market is passing them, nothing can be weighed anymore, and the whole city keeps trading on a trust that has quietly emptied out.
Micchā Ājīva: Wrong Livelihood Earning your bread by means that do harm. Prophet and priest come last in the tally because falsity costs most where it stands: these are the ones people walk to for a straight answer, and a soothing answer sells better than a true one. Bread earned by a comforting word still feeds the household, which is precisely why the word keeps getting spoken.
Hiri and Ottappa: Moral Shame and Dread The inward blush and the fear of what harm brings back, called the two guardians of the world. Cities keep their weights honest and their mouths straight on the strength of these two, and when both fall quiet the ledger and the sermon start lying in the same season, bottom to top. Jeremiah's next breath, that no one so much as knows how to blush anymore, names exactly which guard has walked off the gate.

SUFISM
Wanting more runs top to bottom here, and the sickness is not only the grabbing hand but the crack it opens between what a person says and what a person is. When the mouth blesses while the heart calculates, the whole self splits, and even holy work turns into a mask.
The cure is to close that gap in private: let one honest word match one honest intention. God stands as the witness who reads the seam between them, and who waits for a heart that means what it says.
Buddhism lens
Where does the comfortable version of the truth pay you something?
The worst poverty is not knowing when enough has arrived. Craving owns the one who craves, whatever they happen to be reaching for.
A straight word costs nothing and holds everything together. Say what is, plainly, and let the result be whatever it is.
A town appoints inspectors over its weights and measures, because a market only works while the scale reads the same for everyone. Short measure is treated as the gravest kind of theft, since no one can see it being taken.
