Jeremiah 9:24 Meaning But Let Him Who Glories Glory

But let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am Yahweh who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for I delight in these things,” says Yahweh.

What does Jeremiah 9:24 mean?

The ego loves to glory in what it has gathered: its cleverness, its strength, its possessions. Each becomes another layer of a self made of thought, and none of it brings the peace it promised.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The ego loves to glory in what it has gathered: its cleverness, its strength, its possessions. Each becomes another layer of a self made of thought, and none of it brings the peace it promised. There is something far deeper to rest in.

To truly know the source of life is not to hold an idea about it but to feel its living reality moving as awareness within you, expressing itself as kindness and fairness in how you meet each moment. This is worth more than any achievement because it cannot be taken from you. When your sense of who you are comes from this presence rather than from what you have done, you enjoy living for its own sake and no longer need to prove anything.

Māna: Conceit Conceit is the mind measuring itself against others. The wise man with his learning, the strong man with his arm, the rich man with his full barn each stand on a platform they built themselves, and the city is about to come down around all three. Even the one boast left standing changes hands: glory in what is known, and the one doing the knowing quietly drops out of the account.

Vijjā: True knowing Vijjā is seeing for yourself rather than taking it on report. Having understanding and knowing Yahweh is a different order of possession from the wise man's hoard of wisdom: a person can carry everything ever written about kindness and justice and still not know them the way you know fire by putting your hands near it. Knowledge of that kind alters whoever holds it.

Mettā: Loving kindness Mettā is the wish that beings be well. Loving kindness comes first of the three exercised in the earth, and it heads the list of qualities to be grown here too, since kindness is what keeps justice from hardening. Grown properly it reaches household, neighbor, stranger, and enemy alike, the way a lamp lights whatever happens to be in the room.

Kamma: Deeds and their fruit Kamma is action ripening into result. Justice exercised "in the earth" puts it down in the same soil where the deeds were done: what gets sown in Judah's streets comes up in Judah's streets. The ruin Jeremiah has been announcing all chapter arrives as a harvest, on schedule, with no exemption purchased by wisdom, strength, or money.

Dhamma: The right order, and living by it Dhamma is how things work together with the conduct that fits how things work. Righteousness exercised in the earth closes the gap between who someone is and what they do, so knowing Yahweh means watching what Yahweh does. The loving kindness and the justice are the whole disclosure; nothing else hides behind them.

Chanda: Wholesome desire Chanda is the wish that leans toward the good. Delight steers a life further than resolutions do, so hearing plainly which things are delighted in is being handed something worth wanting. Set beside kindness and justice done in the earth, the learning, the strong arm, and the full barn stop looking like prizes worth holding up.

Just before, people are warned off boasting in their cleverness, strength, and wealth, and the warning uncovers the heart's pride, its urge to build an admirable self out of what it holds. The cure is to trade all of it for one true knowing: to seek acquaintance with God, not applause, and to prize kindness and justice because He does.

The treasure was hidden so it could be known and loved. A heart that knows Him begins to want what He wants, and the kindness, fairness, and right dealing He delights in start to show through the person like light through glass.

Live Jeremiah 9:24 today

  1. On your commute or walk, let one thing you are quietly proud of sit in your mind, then feel what is left of you with that accomplishment taken away. That remainder is the part that was never earned and cannot be lost.
  2. In your next conversation, give one small kindness that nobody will see or credit you for. Hold the door, answer the slow email gently, let the other person finish their point.
  3. When a meeting or a thread turns into people establishing who is the smartest, step out of the contest. Say the useful thing plainly, let the credit go where it goes, and feel how little you actually lose.

If no one ever knew what you had achieved, who would you be?

Bhagavad Gita

The one who acts without clinging to the fruit of the action finds a peace that results can never give. What you do stops being a way of building a self and becomes simply what the moment asks.

Tao Te Ching 33

Knowing others is cleverness, knowing yourself is wisdom. Conquering others takes force, mastering yourself is real strength.
