What a person does with their body in the first hour of a loss decides the state they grieve from.

Grief with no physical expression sets into a state a person then lives inside for years. What breaks it is deliberate movement, the body given something specific to do with the weight. Going to the ground is the last lever left when the upright self has nothing to offer, and worship is reachable there in a way it was not standing.

Words about God spoken in the first hour work the language lever before any meaning has hardened, and the meaning fixed there sets the emotion, and the emotion runs the years after. Whoever goes rigid instead keeps the state that produced the stillness and lives out of it long after the loss itself is finished.

Live Job 1:20 today

  1. When bad news lands, put the phone face down and move your body for ten minutes, a walk around the block, dishes, the stairs. Let the weight have somewhere to travel.
  2. Instead of texting, I am fine, call one person and say the real sentence out loud, even clumsily. Saying it once in the first hours changes what it becomes.
  3. If you have to keep working through something hard, give yourself one honest minute between tasks, sit down, let your face do what it wants, then get up. Clamping down costs more later.

What do I usually do with my body when something hurts, and is it helping me or just hiding me?
