Ego v. Being

A man says my breath, yet he did not make it and cannot hold it. It moves in and out on its own, and the life that fills him each moment comes from somewhere he did not build. What he calls his own breathing is the spirit of God passing through him.

So the deepest life in a person is not a possession but a guest. It arrives on loan. Beneath every thought and every claim of ownership, this quiet aliveness keeps coming, breath after breath. When someone senses that the life inside is borrowed and constant, the grip of the anxious self loosens a little.

Live Job 27:3 today

  1. Before you touch your phone in the morning, take three breaths and let yourself feel that you are not the one doing them. Something keeps you going while you sleep, without asking.
  2. When you are with someone, a partner, a kid, a friend, watch them breathe for a moment while they talk. The same borrowed life is moving through them.
  3. In a stressful meeting or a slow traffic jam, let your attention drop to the air coming in and going out. You do not have to hold anything together for that to keep happening.

What am I gripping as mine that was only ever lent to me?

The same truth in other traditions

Zhuangzi

The true man is said to breathe from his heels, while the ordinary man breathes from his throat. The deep life moving through a person is not something he arranges.

Buddhism · Anapanasati

The first training is simply to feel the breath arriving and leaving, without steering it. Watching it long enough, you see there is no owner anywhere in it, only breathing happening.

Judaism · morning blessing

The old prayer thanks God for returning the soul each morning, as something handed back rather than kept overnight. Each day begins as a loan, not a possession.
