CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Stripped of children, health, and property, a man discovers that one thing has not been taken because it cannot be taken without his consent. He can still refuse to lie. His friends press him to confess sins he did not commit, to buy back comfort with a falsehood, and he will not.

The refusal to speak deceit is the last territory a ruined person still governs. Everything outside can be seized, but the decision to keep your word straight remains yours to the end. Guard the truth of your own speech, and you hold the one ground no catastrophe can flood. That integrity is the floor beneath which a man does not fall.

Live Job 27:4 today

  1. Find the small lie you have been carrying, the excuse, the padded number, the thing you implied. Say the true version to yourself first so you can say it to someone else.
  2. When you are tempted to agree with someone just to end the tension, say the kind true thing instead. Gentle is fine. Dishonest is not.
  3. Under pressure today, in the meeting, the negotiation, the call with the insurance company, do not buy a little comfort with a convenient untruth. Hold the plain facts even if it costs you.

What have I been willing to shade lately, and what did I think it was buying me?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

They can chain your body, exile you, take your property. They cannot make you assent to a lie. That door opens only from the inside.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The true man does not fawn on the powerful or flatter to be safe. He would rather drag his tail in the mud than be an ornament in someone's hall.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

The world stands on truth, justice and peace. Keep your word straight and you are holding up one of the three.
