Job 29:2 Meaning Oh That I Were

Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;

Make an ended season the standard for the one you are in, and every morning arrives already graded a failure.

Grief and a blueprint are different things, and here they are braided together. The losses are real, and the ache laid on top of them comes from a standard: God's care has been defined by what it looked like in one particular stretch of years, so every hour that looks different now reads as abandonment. That reading sets the state, the state governs what a man can hear from his friends and from God, and a man in that state argues instead of listening.

The conditions are past changing; nothing restores those months. What can move is the requirement that divine attention keep one recognizable shape, and until it moves, whatever care he still has stays invisible to him.

Live Job 29:2 today

  1. If you keep replaying a better stretch of your life, let yourself remember it fully once, then put your attention on something physically in front of you. The dishes, the walk, the light in the room.
  2. When someone asks how you are, resist comparing this year to a previous one. Describe today on its own terms and see what is actually in it.
  3. In a hard stretch at work or at home, look for the help that is already arriving in a shape you did not order. A coworker covering something, a quiet evening, a meal someone made.

What good is in front of me right now that I am not counting because it does not look like last time?

Zen · Shunryu Suzuki

Trouble starts when you compare this moment to a remembered one. The beginner's mind has nothing to measure against, so it can meet what is here.

Tao Te Ching

The season that is passing cannot be held, and gripping it is what tears the hands. Water that keeps moving stays clear; water that clings to one bend goes stagnant.

To grieve the loss of what you only ever had on loan is to be surprised by a condition you agreed to at the start.
