Job 29:3 · World English Bible
when his lamp shone on my head, and by his light I walked through darkness,
There is a light that does not come from the world outside you. It shines from the awareness at the very center of your being, and when you are awake to it, it rests upon you like a quiet flame that no darkness can put out.
From the Ego v. Being reading below.
The same verse, read by 3 traditions.

EGO & BEING
There is a light that does not come from the world outside you. It shines from the awareness at the very center of your being, and when you are awake to it, it rests upon you like a quiet flame that no darkness can put out.
With this light you can walk through the hardest and most confusing stretches of a life. The outer situation may be black with difficulty, and still you are not lost in it, because the light is not the circumstance. It is the consciousness you are, and it goes on shining from within no matter how dark the road becomes.

MANIFESTATION
The candle here is the spirit of a man, his own imagination lit and kept burning. It shines upon the head because imagination sits in you where thought is formed, and its light is the only light that ever guides anyone through the dark stretches of a life. The darkness is not a punishment. It is the ordinary confusion of not yet seeing how things will turn out, the plain fact that outer conditions rarely announce where they are headed.
A person walks through that darkness by carrying his own inward seeing ahead of him, letting an imagined outcome show the way when the eyes report nothing. What guides is not chance or advice from outside. It is the picture held steadily within, felt to be so, throwing its light forward until the road it lit becomes the road walked.

SUFISM
A man remembers the days he could cross the dark unafraid, and he is careful to say the lamp was not his. The light shone on him; he only moved by it. The danger, looking back on good times, is to claim the glow as one's own doing and quietly grow proud of a brightness never made by the self.
So the practice is honest memory, thanking the source instead of the self, keeping the borrowed lamp named as borrowed. And this is where the giver is found. The One who lit the way was present in the very light, close as a flame to what it falls upon.
Ego v. Being lens
When the road went dark, what in me was still able to see?
Be a lamp unto yourself, the dying teacher says, and take no other refuge. No one else can carry the light for you.
The light you have been searching the world for is burning inside the one doing the searching. Looking outward for it keeps you in the dark.
There is a light that shines beyond the sky, beyond the heart, and it is the same light within. Where it shines, neither sun nor moon nor fire is needed.
