Job 29:4 Meaning As I Was in My Prime

as I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was in my tent,

What does Job 29:4 mean?

There are seasons a person remembers as a time when everything felt whole, when an unseen aliveness seemed to rest over the ordinary house of their days. The mind calls this the past and mourns it as lost, believing the closeness belonged to a younger self and cannot return.

Ego v. Being

There are seasons a person remembers as a time when everything felt whole, when an unseen aliveness seemed to rest over the ordinary house of their days. The mind calls this the past and mourns it as lost, believing the closeness belonged to a younger self and cannot return. But what was present then was never a possession of youth. It was presence itself, always available, simply felt more easily before the head filled with noise.

The ache of looking back is the ache of seeking in memory what is only ever found now. That quiet nearness did not depart with the years; attention drifted from it into thought and time. Grow still in this moment, and you discover the same secret was never withdrawn, only unnoticed while the mind was busy elsewhere.

Live Job 29:4 today

  1. When a memory of a better season pulls at you, let it come, then put your hand on something real in the room and feel the aliveness that is here now, the same one that was there then.
  2. With family, resist turning dinner into remember-when. Ask what someone is living right now, and let tonight be the good season.
  3. Scrolling back through old photos, stop after a few and set the phone down. The warmth you are reaching for is in the one looking, not the pictures.

What am I grieving as gone that is actually standing right here?

Zen

A student asks for the gate to the way, and the teacher answers: do you hear the stream? That is the gate. It was never somewhere back there.

Tao Te Ching

The way is not far off and never left. Return to it the way water settles, and what you were chasing is already here.

Stoicism · Seneca

We lose life by postponing it, forever in the past or the future, never in the day we are actually given. The present is the only piece we ever actually hold.
