CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The voice out of the whirlwind does not answer Job's grief with comfort. It answers with scale. Where were you when the ground of things was set? A suffering man wants the universe explained on his terms, and the reply is that his terms are far too small to hold the answer.

Humility begins the moment a person grasps how much stands beneath him that he did not build and cannot see. The foundations were laid before he arrived. To live sanely, a man accepts that he inherits a structure vaster than his understanding, and steadies himself on it anyway.

Live Job 38:6 today

  1. On your commute, pick one ordinary thing you depend on and trace it back. The water in your tap, the road under the tires. Thousands of hands you will never meet laid that before you showed up.
  2. Ask someone older than you about a decision they made before you were born that still shapes your life. Let them talk longer than feels comfortable, and do not steer it back to you.
  3. In the next tense meeting or argument, try the sentence "I might be missing something here." Not as a tactic. Say it because it is almost always true.

What are you standing on today that you did not build and could not rebuild?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The Tao gave rise to everything and asks no credit for it. The wise person works with that older order rather than trying to be its author.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You are one small thread in an immense weave that was running long before you and will run long after. Remembering your size in it is not humiliation, it is accuracy.

Upanishads

The ground of being is beyond the reach of the mind that tries to measure it. The eye cannot see itself, and the knower cannot stand outside what holds him.
