Am I not your Lord: the yes given before anyone was born Sufis call that question the Day of Alast, when every soul answered before having a body. Being asked about a beginning you missed can feel like being locked out of your own story. The tradition says you were there in a manner memory cannot reach, and your pull toward what is older than you is what remains.

Nafas al-Raḥmān: The Breath of the Merciful Ibn Arabi describes creation as words carried out on a single breath of mercy. Every created thing then arrives already sounding, the way spoken words do. For someone convinced the world is cold machinery, mercy turns out to be the stuff it is made from, and gladness is the ordinary sound of that.

Tasbīḥ: The praise everything gives The Quran holds that nothing exists without praising God, though we cannot make out the words. The praise did not stop once the world was finished; birds, water, and dust keep at it while people go about their day. When your own thanks have dried up, the praise around you keeps going, and none of it depends on you joining in.

Malakūt: The unseen kingdom Al-Ghazali sets the world our eyes reach alongside a hidden kingdom of angels behind it. Most people live entirely inside the first one and assume nobody else is around. Learning that other beings were glad when the world began widens a room you thought you were sitting in alone.

Ḥayra: Bewilderment Ibn Arabi treats being lost for words in front of God as a high place to stand. Questions nobody can answer usually feel like a door slamming, especially to a person already demanding answers of their own. Coming up empty in front of something that vast is the right size of response, and standing there is allowed.

Live Job 38:7 today

  1. Step outside for two minutes without your phone and just listen to whatever is making noise, birds, traffic, wind in a tree. None of it needed you to start, and none of it is waiting on your mood.
  2. The next time someone tells you they are happy about something while you are flat and tired, let their gladness be real instead of dimming it. You can be glad something is good without feeling it yourself.
  3. On a morning when you wake up with nothing in you, go stand at a window for a minute before you open your email. The day started without your permission and it is already going.

What was already singing around you this morning while you were not listening?

The way gave rise to one, and the one to two, and so on until everything was here. All of it came out of a single movement, and everything still carries that movement inside it.
