Job 9:21 · World English Bible
I am blameless. I don’t respect myself. I despise my life.
A man sits in ash, worn past defending himself. He stops adding up his goodness.
From the Ego v. Being reading below.
The same verse, read by one tradition.

EGO & BEING
A man sits in ash, worn past defending himself. He stops adding up his goodness. Even flawless, he could not find his soul by measuring it, because the one doing the measuring is only the mind's picture of himself.
His contempt for his life is the mind turning on the small self it built and once believed in. When that image finally cracks, something quieter stays that was never the achievement or the failure. A person loosened from the story of who they were begins to sense the still presence underneath. That presence is the soul the counting could never reach.
Ego v. Being lens
Who is still here when you stop keeping score?
The self cannot be found by the thinking that goes looking for it, because the seeker is the sought. What is nearest is missed exactly because it is doing the searching.
Asked for his original face, the one he had before his parents were born, the student had nothing to show. Every answer he could assemble was already a thing he had made.
The way forward is by subtraction, not addition. You do not become more yourself by piling up accomplishments; you arrive when there is nothing left to pile.
