John 1:38 Meaning Jesus Turned and Saw Them Following

Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), “where are you staying?”

What does John 1:38 mean?

What are you seeking? It is worth stopping to ask, because the mind is always seeking, always reaching for the next moment, the next teacher, the next place where it imagines fulfillment lives.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

What are you seeking? It is worth stopping to ask, because the mind is always seeking, always reaching for the next moment, the next teacher, the next place where it imagines fulfillment lives. When you meet someone who is truly awake, the first thing you want to know is where they dwell, as if presence were a location you could travel to.

But the one who is awake dwells nowhere you can reach by seeking. He abides in the Now, in the aliveness of this present moment, the one place anyone truly lives. You do not get there by following another person. You get there by becoming still and present exactly where you already are.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The turning is the whole matter. Awareness swings around to face what has been quietly following it, and the first question it puts is what do you want, because desire is the seed of everything that comes. Nothing moves in a person until a wish is named, and the power within asks for that wish before it grants anything.

Those who follow call him Master and ask where he lives, and the answer is not a place on a map. The creative power dwells in the feeling of the wish already fulfilled, and that is the only address at which it can be found. A person meets it not by traveling anywhere but by naming what he wants and moving into the state where that want is already his. Where you dwell in feeling is where this power lives with you.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A person who cannot name what they want will keep receiving whatever happens to be nearby.

A direct question about desire is an audit, and most people fail it, having moved for years without naming a target. An unnamed want produces drifting, since the mind cannot search for what was never specified, and Jesus opens by forcing the specification.

Two men could have asked for a teaching and received a sentence. Asking instead where he lives is a request for duration, and duration is where character transfers. Asking for information gets information, and the asker walks away with a fact instead of a life.

  1. Catch yourself opening an app you already checked five minutes ago and just stop there for a second. Ask what you were actually hoping to find.
  2. When you are with someone today, let the conversation be enough. Do not scan for the next thing to say or half plan where you are going after.
  3. In a dull meeting or a long line, drop the wish to be somewhere else and give the next ten minutes your real attention. The waiting is not the gap before your life, it is some of your life.

What are you actually looking for when you reach for your phone?

Craving is the thirst that keeps promising to end at the next cup. The ending is not in the next cup but in seeing the thirst for what it is.

Tao Te Ching 47

You can know the world without going out the door. Travel far enough looking for it and you will know less than when you left.

People sail across the sea and change nothing, because they bring the same restless mind with them. The problem was never the place.
