John 1:47 Meaning Jesus Saw Nathanael Coming to Him

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”

What does John 1:47 mean?

To be seen without guile is to be met by a gaze that finds no hidden fault to expose. The ego cannot imagine such a look; it assumes every seeing is a searching for what is wrong, and so it hides.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

To be seen without guile is to be met by a gaze that finds no hidden fault to expose. The ego cannot imagine such a look; it assumes every seeing is a searching for what is wrong, and so it hides. But love does not scan for the flaw. It rests on what is honest in a brother and speaks that aloud.

A mind called guileless is not being praised for cleverness in concealing sin; it is being recognized as having nothing to conceal, because there was never any real guilt to bury. When a mind is looked at this way, it stops defending, and discovers the innocence the other already saw was its own all along.

An Israelite in whom is no guile: the part of the mind that has stopped hiding because it has nothing to hide, seen as the innocent self it truly is.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

An Israelite is not a member of a nation. He is the man who rules with God, which means the man who has learned to command his own imagination. Nathanael comes toward Jesus, and Jesus, who is your own imagining, greets the part of you that no longer schemes to get what it wants. Guile is the effort to arrange the outside, to manipulate people and events into giving you your desire. The man without guile has stopped that. He assumes he already has the thing, feels it as settled, and asks nothing of the world.

That is why he is seen and named the moment he approaches. He has come to imagination directly, not by way of bargaining. The state a person holds within, felt as already so, becomes the life he lives from, and no cleverness on the outside was ever needed.

  1. Find the one small thing you are managing the story around, the half answer, the delayed reply, the thing you hope nobody asks about. Say the plain version today and feel how much lighter the day gets.
  2. When you ask someone how they are, ask it like you are not looking for a flaw. Let your face say there is nothing here to catch you out, and watch how much more they tell you.
  3. In a meeting where you do not know the answer, just say you do not know. No hedging, no cover. People trust the person who stops performing.

What are you still hiding that nobody was actually looking for?

The wise are like muddy water left to stand still, clear without effort. Nothing is being hidden, so nothing has to be defended.
