John 1:51 Meaning He Said to Him

He said to him, “Most certainly, I tell you all, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

What does John 1:51 mean?

The mind imagines heaven as a locked and distant place, sealed off from a world it believes is fallen. But there is a promise that the seeming barrier will open, that the traffic between what is high and what is low never truly stopped, and that thoughts of love have been moving freely all along between the source and the Son.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind imagines heaven as a locked and distant place, sealed off from a world it believes is fallen. But there is a promise that the seeming barrier will open, that the traffic between what is high and what is low never truly stopped, and that thoughts of love have been moving freely all along between the source and the Son.

What descends and rises upon the Son of man is the constant communication the mind only thought it had lost. Heaven opens not because a gate finally swings wide, but because the mind stops believing there was ever a wall. A mind that lets itself remember this finds the distance it feared was only a dream, and love was always reaching it.

Heaven opened: the mind's recognition that no real barrier ever stood between it and its source. Angels ascending and descending: the unbroken movement of loving thought between the source and the Son, the communication the mind only dreamed it had lost. The Son of man: the part of the mind that had believed itself earthbound and separate, now seen as the very place where heaven touches down.

Live John 1:51 today

  1. Pick one dull stretch of today, the commute, the dishes, the grocery line, and stop treating it as the gap between the parts that count. Nothing is being withheld from you in that ten minutes.
  2. Let one ordinary exchange be the real event of your day, the chat with the neighbor, the few minutes at the kitchen table. The good thing is not somewhere else waiting for better conditions.
  3. In the middle of a hard afternoon, stop and look out the nearest window for thirty seconds. Nothing has to change for the day to open. You just stopped assuming it was closed.

What have you been waiting to open that was never actually shut?

Tao Te Ching 1

The source and the ten thousand things are not two places. What seems like a line between the sacred and the everyday is drawn by the one looking.

Zen

The teaching is that this very ground is it. Nothing has to open, because there was no lid. Carrying water and chopping wood is the whole thing.

Kabbalah

There is no place empty of the divine. The world is not a sealed room with heaven somewhere outside it. It is already full.
