John 10:2 Meaning But One Who Enters

But one who enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

What does John 10:2 mean?

The thought that enters openly, with nothing to hide and nothing to seize, is the one voice a mind can safely trust to lead. It does not sneak past the mind's defenses because it has no need to; love has no argument to win and no ground to take.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The thought that enters openly, with nothing to hide and nothing to seize, is the one voice a mind can safely trust to lead. It does not sneak past the mind's defenses because it has no need to; love has no argument to win and no ground to take. It comes the honest way, through the door that was always standing open, and by coming this way it shows what it is.

A mind can tell its true guide by this alone. Whatever leads by fear has climbed in by another route and cannot be trusted with a single decision. Whatever comes gently, in the open, wanting only to guide the mind home, is the part of itself that already knows the way.

Door: the honest entrance to the mind, the way of love that hides nothing Shepherd: the voice for love within the mind, the gentle guide that leads a person's thoughts back to peace Sheep: the thoughts a mind holds, the quiet company it follows toward one teacher or the other

  1. Before you answer the message you have been dreading, pause and feel which voice is drafting the reply, the calm one or the braced one, and let the calm one write.
  2. When you are about to give someone advice, check whether you are trying to scare them into it, and if you are, say the gentler version instead.
  3. When a decision at work starts to feel urgent and scary, wait an hour if you can, because fear always wants it decided now and clarity never does.

Which voice in me have I been treating as the sensible one, and is it actually calm?

The sage leads without forcing and acts without grasping, so the people barely feel led at all. What has to push is not the real guide.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Ask yourself whether the impulse moving you comes from fear or from reason, because only one of them is yours. Anxiety has never once given sound counsel.

The teaching that frees you arrives plainly and keeps nothing back. Anything demanding secrecy and urgency is selling something.
