John 10:34 Meaning Jesus Answered Them

Jesus answered them, “Isn’t it written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods?’

What does John 10:34 mean?

The mind hears the truth of its own nature as blasphemy only because it has forgotten what it is. To be told it shares the being of its Source sounds like a theft of glory to a self that thinks itself small and guilty, and so it reaches for the stones of judgment.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind hears the truth of its own nature as blasphemy only because it has forgotten what it is. To be told it shares the being of its Source sounds like a theft of glory to a self that thinks itself small and guilty, and so it reaches for the stones of judgment. Yet the words were written in its own law all along; the greatness it is being accused of is simply the fact of what it was created to be.

What looks like arrogance from behind the veil of separation is only accuracy once the veil is lifted. The mind is not being flattered but reminded, and the reminder threatens nothing except the smallness it mistook for itself.

Law: the truth already written in the mind about its own nature, the record it has forgotten how to read.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

You are told, in your own law, that you are gods, and the words are meant exactly as they stand. The I AM in you is not a small self borrowed from a larger one. It is the creative power itself, wearing your name, playing your part. The awareness by which you know you exist is the same awareness that made all things, buried in you and waiting to be recognized.

The crowd hears blasphemy because they picture God as someone far off, someone other. The correction is not that you resemble God, but that the awareness saying I in you is God taking on the lesser office of a man. This is why the world answers your assumptions: you and the world that responds are one being. The power hidden in you is called David, the Christ within, and it comes forth as your own identity when the appointed hour arrives.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The divine is not off in a far heaven but seated within the human being as its own deepest nature. The higher self reminds the lower that the god-nature was written into a person from the start; what religion pushed away into the sky was always the awareness within, the ruling light of one's own consciousness. To be called gods is to be shown that the very self doing the seeing and knowing is itself divine.

The god you look for above is the awareness already living inside you. What is being said is that a person's own consciousness is the divine thing, and it was never anywhere else.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

When the divine is called out from inside a person instead of found only in the sky, everything changes. To be told "you are gods" is not flattery. It points to a center in every mind that is already whole, that holds the good and the bad together, and that a person spends a whole life slowly uncovering.

This is why the old saying was kept and repeated. The image of God is not only above and outside. It is also planted in the human soul, and a person becomes like God by growing toward that inner center until it, and not the small everyday self, is what runs the life.

Live John 10:34 today

  1. Catch yourself today in that familiar thought, that you are not much. Then try saying something truer in your head instead, that whatever made everything is also what you are made of.
  2. Tell one person something good and real about themselves, the kind of thing people brush off. Say it plainly and let them be uncomfortable with it for a second.
  3. Next time someone's confidence annoys you, or your own does, check whether what you are calling arrogance is just somebody standing at their actual size. See if you can let it be.

What good thing about myself do I keep refusing to believe, because believing it feels like bragging?

Chandogya Upanishad

The line "you are that" is not praise of a person. It is a flat statement of what you have been all along, however little you feel.

Zen

Teachers keep saying that you already have the Buddha nature and that your poor opinion of yourself is the only thing hiding it.

Hasidic Judaism

Carry two notes in your pockets: one saying you are dust, the other saying the world was made for your sake. Both are true, and the second is the one you forget.
