John 13:33 Meaning Little Children

Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come,’ so now I tell you.

What does John 13:33 mean?

He speaks tenderly, on the edge of departure, and tells them they will look for him and not find him where they expect. They are still seeking him as a form, a person present in the room, and that form is about to be gone.

Ego v. Being

He speaks tenderly, on the edge of departure, and tells them they will look for him and not find him where they expect. They are still seeking him as a form, a person present in the room, and that form is about to be gone. Their searching will fail because it is aimed outward, at a shape in the world.

Where he goes they cannot follow, not yet, because it is a movement into pure being, beyond the level of separate persons coming and going. What they truly seek was never only the body before them. When you stop looking for presence as something outside you and grow quiet within, you find it was always here, in the depth you carry. Then the leaving of a form no longer means loss.

  1. When you reach for your phone out of a vague hunger for something, put it down and stay with the hunger for sixty seconds without feeding it.
  2. With someone you love, stop trying to get the exact response you want from them. Be with who is actually in the room, not the version you keep reaching for.
  3. When you miss someone who is gone or far away and the ache gets sharp, don't scroll their photos. Sit still and let the love be in you, where it has been living all along.

What am I looking for out there that may already be here, waiting for me to get quiet?
