John 13:8 Meaning Peter Said to Him

Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”

What does John 13:8 mean?

The refusal to be served is pride wearing the mask of humility, and the ego offers it eagerly, because to be cleansed is to admit the need for cleansing and to receive is to let another give. A mind that will not be washed is defending its guilt, insisting it must earn its own release rather than accept it as a gift.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The refusal to be served is pride wearing the mask of humility, and the ego offers it eagerly, because to be cleansed is to admit the need for cleansing and to receive is to let another give. A mind that will not be washed is defending its guilt, insisting it must earn its own release rather than accept it as a gift. But love cannot join a mind that keeps this distance, for its whole gift is the removal of the guilt the mind clings to, and refused, the gift cannot be shared.

So to have part with love is simply to let love do for the mind what the mind cannot do alone. The washing is forgiveness, offered freely and received only by the willing. A mind holds itself apart only by declining the very cleansing that would end its sense of separation.

The feet: the part of the self that walks the world and gathers its dust, offered to love to be cleansed.

The feet are the lowest reach of the body, where the higher self meets the ground of physical desire and daily walking in the flesh. Peter is the stubborn rock of the personality, the part that refuses to have its base cleansed because it clings to standing on its own. The Christ within warns that the feet must be washed by the anointing that flows downward, or the flesh stays uncleansed and remains cut off from the light rising through the spine.

Refusal of the lowest cleansing keeps a person split, the crown ignoring what happens at the ground. Only when the base is washed does the whole body belong to the inner light.

Feet: the lowest part of the body where spirit touches earth and desire, the base that must be cleansed for the whole to be pure Peter: the rock of the fixed personality, hard and self-reliant, that resists having its foundation opened

Live John 13:8 today

  1. Say yes to one offer you would normally wave off today: the seat, the ride, the help carrying things, the extra set of eyes on your draft. Say thank you and leave it at that, with no favor promised back.
  2. When someone asks how you are actually doing, tell them one true hard thing instead of "busy, all good." Let them care about it without fixing it.
  3. If you are behind at work, ask for help before the deadline rather than after. Sending that message is not an admission that you are not enough.

What am I turning down because taking it would mean admitting I needed it?
