John 14:8 Meaning Philip Said to Him

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

What does John 14:8 mean?

The mind still convinced of separation asks for God to be shown to it as a distant sight, believing it must be given from outside what it lost. This is the plea of one who looks everywhere but within, certain that satisfaction waits in some vision yet to come rather than in the innocence already present.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind still convinced of separation asks for God to be shown to it as a distant sight, believing it must be given from outside what it lost. This is the plea of one who looks everywhere but within, certain that satisfaction waits in some vision yet to come rather than in the innocence already present.

The asking is not wrong, only misdirected. What would suffice the mind is not another thing to see but a change in the eyes that look. It seeks a Father far off while standing in His presence, mistaking its own forgetting for His absence.

Philip: the part of the mind that still believes God must be shown from without, the seeker who has not yet looked within.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Philip wants the Father pointed out, some figure standing apart that he can look at and be satisfied. That is the mistake the whole scene turns on. The Father is not a person met on a road or a face seen across a room.

The Father is the simple sense of being that sits behind every thought, the "I am" you feel before you add a single word to it. A man keeps searching outward for it because he expects a stranger, and all the while it is the awareness doing the searching. To ask for it to be shown is to ask where your own looking comes from. Nothing else needs to be produced. The seeing and the sought are one thing, and that recognition is the whole of what Philip was reaching for.

Live John 14:8 today

  1. When you catch yourself scrolling for something that will finally settle you, put the phone down and sit for a minute with nothing. The restlessness is not information about what is missing.
  2. Stop waiting for your partner or friend to say the one thing that will reassure you, and let what they already give you count. The reassurance you want may have arrived in a smaller shape.
  3. On the hard day, resist the thought that it will be fine once this one thing resolves. Let today be the day that counts rather than the one you get through.

What am I asking life to show me that I have simply not looked at yet?
