John 15:9 Meaning Even as the Father Has Loved Me

Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.

What does John 15:9 mean?

A love with no beginning and no cause outside itself sets the measure, the Father's for the Son. The same love had already reached these men before anything was asked of them.

PROTESTANT

Protestant

A love with no beginning and no cause outside itself sets the measure, the Father's for the Son. The same love had already reached these men before anything was asked of them. Their standing in it was his doing, never their achievement.

Staying in it means living somewhere rather than visiting, what a resident does in a house he did not build. Remaining there is the whole of what these men are given to do. The love was never theirs to manufacture. Warmth they cannot feel on a given morning changes nothing about where they live.

ORTHODOX

Orthodox

The love handed to the disciples is the same love the Father has for the Son, not a smaller kind made for creatures. Because it is that love, a person can live inside it rather than only feel it, and be slowly changed by it.

Remaining there is work, carried by prayer, forgiveness, and the commandments taken seriously. It comes as a command because people can leave, usually by small refusals rather than one dramatic exit. What holds anyone inside is the love itself, given before anything was done to deserve it, and never withdrawn from the one who turns back toward it.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The love a mind is offered is not a lesser or borrowed thing; it is the same love the source pours into all that it creates, passed along unbroken and undiminished. Nothing is held back, because love does not measure or ration itself.

To continue in that love is not to earn it or keep it from slipping away, for it cannot be lost. It is simply to remain where the mind already is, to stop wandering off in fear and dwell in the one place that was always its home. Staying in love means only ceasing to imagine oneself outside it.

Father: the source of all love in the mind, the origin from which love flows without condition or limit.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Love is a place to stay, not a thing to feel.

Love is not a feeling generated toward you but a field you remain inside. The instruction is to stop leaving it.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Love here is described as something passed down, one link handing on what it received, so that the same current keeps flowing. He does not tell them to manufacture love out of nothing. He tells them to stay inside a stream that was already given to him first.

The hard word is continue. Feeling loved is one thing; remaining in it is another, because our doubts and our sense of unworthiness are always pulling us back out. To stay means to keep trusting that the love holds even on the days you cannot feel it. That steady belonging, not a passing warm feeling, is what quietly heals a person and makes them able to give the same thing on.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Love here is not primarily a feeling that visits you. It is a place you decide to remain, spoken by a man to his friends on the night before he is taken from them. To continue in love is an act of will repeated daily, especially when the warmth has drained away.

Anything precious must be actively maintained or it decays. A marriage, a friendship, a devotion to what is highest, none of it holds itself together. You have to keep choosing it, keep returning to it, keep tending it against your own drift toward carelessness. Love lasts only for those who keep choosing to stay inside it.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A person can only pass along the regard he has first received and kept. Love comes down a line. Here it runs from Father to Son to friend, each one steadied by being held before he holds anyone. To continue in it is to stay inside that steadying warmth rather than drift back into the cold self-image of the unwanted.

Much of a life is lived out of the picture others first drew of us. When that picture is one of being loved, a person carries it into every room. He remains where the warmth is, and slowly it becomes the way he sees himself.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Love is not only something that happens to a person; it is a state they can choose to live inside and refuse to leave. Here a figure hands His followers the same love He was given and asks one thing, that they stay in it, because the moment they drift out, fear and scarcity rush in to run the show.

A man who decides each morning to remain in love meets the same hard day from a place of strength rather than lack. Staying connected to that feeling on purpose is what keeps a life generous instead of guarded.

Live John 15:9 today

  1. On a flat morning when you feel nothing at all, go through the ordinary motions anyway, the walk, the quiet, the few words. Feeling is weather and where you live is not.
  2. Tell someone close to you something good about them that has nothing to do with what they have done for you lately. Watch how hard it is for them to take it without deflecting.
  3. When you fail at something in front of other people and the shame starts building its case, refuse to renegotiate your worth over it. You are not being evicted over a bad quarter.

Do I act like love is a house I live in, or a hotel I keep paying for?

Sufism · Rumi

You did not earn your way into the garden and you cannot be billed for the fruit. The love came first, and your longing for it is the echo of it already arriving.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

The way nourishes everything without being asked and without keeping accounts. It does not love you more on the days you perform well.

Judaism · the daily blessings

The ancient morning prayer thanks God for a love that was there before the day began, not one the day earns. You wake up already inside it.
