The hour had stayed ahead until now, always not yet. Its arrival means arrest, trial, and a cross, so the request to be glorified, to be shown as who he is, asks for that road rather than escape. The Father answers by raising him to the standing he held before the world began.

Eyes open and lifted was ordinary prayer posture; the bare Father, with no title attached, carries a son's certainty of a hearing. The Son asks honor so that it comes back to the Father. Everyone who trusts him is saved by what the Father granted.

  1. Name the thing you have been calling later, the appointment, the apology, the phone call, and put it on the calendar for this week with a time on it. Later has been doing a lot of work for you.
  2. When someone asks how you are and you can feel the hard thing coming up your throat, tell one real sentence of it instead of fine. Let it be heard by a person and not just by your own head.
  3. Walk into the difficult meeting first rather than last, and start with the part you dread. Going toward it is a different act than being dragged into it.

What am I asking to be spared that I am actually being asked to walk through?

You are an actor given a role you did not write, and your part is to play it well, not to negotiate for an easier one. Dignity lies in walking into the scene you were given.

Buddhism · Zen

The gateless gate is the only way through, and there is no path around it. What you keep hoping to avoid turns out to be the door.
