John 17:2 Meaning Even as You Gave Him Authority Over

even as you gave him authority over all flesh, so he will give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

What does John 17:2 mean?

Power over flesh is not command over bodies but freedom from the belief that a body is what one is. The awakened mind is given authority exactly there, where fear insists life is trapped in something that ages and dies, and it uses that authority to release, never to rule.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Power over flesh is not command over bodies but freedom from the belief that a body is what one is. The awakened mind is given authority exactly there, where fear insists life is trapped in something that ages and dies, and it uses that authority to release, never to rule.

Eternal life is given by extending it, and it reaches all who are drawn to Love. A mind that knows it is not the flesh can teach another the same, and in that teaching both remember the life that was never born and so can never end.

Flesh: the body, the small self fear takes for a prison, the seeming boundary that hides the changeless life within.

Live John 17:2 today

  1. In front of the mirror or the camera roll today, skip the inventory of what is wrong with you. You are the one looking, not the thing being measured.
  2. Say something to one person today that frees them a little rather than holds them in place. No correcting, no reminding them of who they used to be.
  3. When your body is tired or aching and it tries to tell you that is all you are, keep going gently without believing the story. Pain is loud and still not the whole truth.

What do I believe about myself that is really just a belief about my body?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita 2

Weapons do not cut it, fire does not burn it, the body comes and goes around something that does not. What you are was never inside the thing that ends.

Advaita Vedanta

You are not the body you watch, any more than you are the room you sit in. Freedom begins the moment that distinction is real to you.

Zen

A teacher who has set down the chains does not hand you new ones. The only thing worth passing on is the open hand.
