John 17:16 Meaning They Are Not of the World Even

They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.

What does John 17:16 mean?

Something in you was never of this world. Not your name, not your history, not the roles you play, for these belong to the world of form and will pass.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Something in you was never of this world. Not your name, not your history, not the roles you play, for these belong to the world of form and will pass. Beneath them lives a silent awareness, simply present, watching it all and untouched by it.

To know yourself as that awareness is to feel lightly held above the world even while walking through it. You still live here, you still act and love. But you no longer take yourself to be only a piece of the world, because you have felt the presence that was here before the world began.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The awakened faculties do not belong to the outer field of sense and appetite. Spoken from the single eye, this sets the inner presence and those gathered to it apart from the world, meaning the whole realm of the reasoning senses and their attachments. The I AM here is the pineal center, the point of awareness that never was of the world and cannot be pulled into it. What is gathered to that center shares its nature: raised above the crowd of outward thought, no longer sourced from the field of flesh.

To be not of the world is to have one's origin inside, in the still center of the head, rather than in the noise of the senses. The faculties that have been drawn up to the single eye simply no longer take their life from the outer field.

I am: the single eye, the pineal center of awareness that was never of the outer world.

Live John 17:16 today

  1. Once today, in the middle of something ordinary, ask who is doing this, and then just be the quiet that answers instead of the names that come up.
  2. When someone introduces you by your job, feel the gap between the label and whoever is standing there hearing it. Shake their hand anyway and be warm.
  3. On a day when your work is being judged, hold the feedback at arm's length long enough to see that whatever is being graded is not the part of you that is alive.

If you took away my name, my job, and my history, what would be left standing here?

Bhagavad Gita 2

Weapons cannot cut it, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, wind cannot dry it. What you most truly are was never a thing that happens to you.

Zen

Ask yourself what your face looked like before your parents were born. Whatever answer the mind offers, it is not that.

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to the root and watch it all come and go. Standing there, you are steady while everything around you rises and falls.
