John 18:6 Meaning When Therefore He Said to Them

When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward, and fell to the ground.

What does John 18:6 mean?

I Am. These are the two most powerful words, for they name the presence that you are before any thought defines you.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

I Am. These are the two most powerful words, for they name the presence that you are before any thought defines you. Spoken from complete stillness, they carry the force of Being itself, and the mind that meets them has nothing to hold on to.

Those who came armed with their purposes stood suddenly before pure presence, and the ego they lived from could not withstand it. They fell back not from any force of the body, but because meeting what truly is exposes the self built of thought as unreal, and for a moment that false self simply collapsed.

Live John 18:6 today

  1. Once today, before you speak, let yourself be completely still for one breath. Then say the simple true thing instead of the clever one.
  2. When someone comes in hot, do not match their energy and do not shrink from it. Stay quiet and present and watch what happens to the heat.
  3. In a meeting where everyone is performing certainty, try saying plainly what you actually know and actually do not. The room usually goes quieter in a good way.

What in me needs to be impressive, and what would be left if it stopped trying?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

The deepest word for what you are is simply that it is. Every description the mind reaches for falls short and falls away.

Tao Te Ching 43

The soft overcomes the hard and the still outlasts the forceful. What has nothing to defend cannot be pushed over.

Zen

A mind full of opinions arrives and finds nothing to grip. Standing in front of plain presence, the whole argument it came with just empties out.
