EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Soldiers come with torches to seize a man, and he does not run. They name the one they want, and he answers, I am he. He does not flinch. A calm in him meets the whole scene as it is, betrayer standing among them and all.

That steadiness comes from a place the arrest cannot touch. When a person is fully present, accepting what this moment holds instead of fighting it, fear loses its grip. He walks toward what is coming without resistance. The peace in him does not depend on the situation being safe. It depends on his being awake within it.

Live John 18:5 today

  1. When the thing you have been dreading finally lands today, the call, the bill, the message, let yourself feel it fully for thirty seconds before you start managing it.
  2. If someone comes at you with an accusation, let the first words out of your mouth be plain and true rather than defensive. "Yes, that was me" costs less than it feels like it will.
  3. In the hardest ten minutes of your day, stop asking for the situation to be different and put all of that effort into being completely present to it.

How much of what I call fear is really just refusing to be here for this?

Bhagavad Gita 2

Meet gain and loss, pleasure and pain, with the same steady face. The outcome is not in your hands, and the steadiness is.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

What stands in the way becomes the way. The thing you dreaded, once accepted, is simply the next piece of your life.

Zen

When it is time to sit, sit. When it is time to be arrested, be arrested. The resistance is the only extra suffering.
