John 19:11 Meaning Jesus Answered

Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.”

What does John 19:11 mean?

A mind at peace understands that nothing outside it holds real power over it, and that whatever seems to threaten from the world was first handed that force by a mind willing to be afraid. The one who feels attacked is never truly at the mercy of the attacker, because the attack carries only the strength a frightened mind lends it, and that strength can be withdrawn the moment love is chosen instead of fear.

The heavier weight falls on the one who handed the innocent over to judgment. This is not a sentence passed from above but a simple recognition: to deliver another to condemnation is to teach guilt where forgiveness was possible, and the mind that teaches fear stays the one most bound by it.

He that delivered: the part of the mind that hands innocence over to be condemned, the teacher of guilt who binds himself in the very act of accusing another.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

No outer force has any power over you on its own. Pilate stands for every circumstance that seems to press against you, and he is told plainly that his power is on loan, handed down from above, from the one awareness that dreams the whole scene. The world can only do to you what has first been granted from within. The condition is never the cause.

The greater fault lies with the one who delivered him up, and that one is closer to home than any judge. To miss your aim is to hand yourself over to the very state you did not want, and then watch it act out its sentence through people and events. Sin here means missing the mark, holding the wrong conception of yourself. So the outer world only carries out what you consented to inwardly. Nothing has power against you except what you first gave it.

  1. Reread the message that has been gnawing at you all morning and find the exact sentence where you handed it its power. Then put the phone down and let that power come back to you.
  2. When someone tells you a story meant to recruit you against a third person, hear it without taking the side you are being offered. You can care about the teller without agreeing to the verdict.
  3. In traffic or a slow line, when the heat rises at someone who has no idea you exist, say inwardly: this has no hold on me unless I give it one. Then let your hands unclench on the wheel.

What am I treating as an attack on me that is really just something I have agreed to be hurt by?

Stoicism · Epictetus

People are not disturbed by things themselves but by their opinions about those things. What you call an insult only lands when you decide it has.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Take away your judgment of being harmed and the harm itself goes with it. The power an offense has over you is the power you keep lending it.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Hatred held against another scorches the one holding it first. The person who wishes another condemned is already living inside the condemnation.
