John 2:6 Meaning Now There Were Six Water Pots

Now there were six water pots of stone set there after the Jews’ way of purifying, containing two or three metretes apiece.

What does John 2:6 mean?

The 6 stone vessels are the fixed containers of the natural body standing ready at the border of a person's change, the hardened forms of the lower nature that hold only the water of ordinary washing. The number 6 is the mark of unfinished creation and material man, the work not yet raised to its 7th completion.

Stone is the density of the flesh, and these jars hold the plain water of outward cleansing, the merely bodily life before spirit transforms it. When the water in them turns to wine, the ordinary vitality of the body is quickened into the living power of the higher life, the base substance of a person raised into spirit.

  1. Look at one plain habit you already have, the morning walk, the drive, the dishes, and keep it exactly as it is while bringing your full attention into it. Same container, different contents.
  2. With someone you see every day and barely look at anymore, ask one real question and wait for the whole answer. The routine stays, the meeting inside it changes.
  3. When a stretch of the day feels empty and dead, stop trying to escape it and let the emptiness be room for something. What feels unfinished in you is simply not full yet.

Which ordinary part of my life is already the right shape and just waiting to be filled?

A pot is useful because of the empty space inside it. What holds nothing yet is exactly what is ready to be filled.
