John 20:16 Meaning Jesus Said to Her

Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!” which is to say, “Teacher!”

What does John 20:16 mean?

A single name spoken in love can undo an entire morning of mourning, because recognition is not reasoned into; it is remembered the moment the mind is called by the One who knows it. She had looked and not seen; now she is named, and knowing floods back.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A single name spoken in love can undo an entire morning of mourning, because recognition is not reasoned into; it is remembered the moment the mind is called by the One who knows it. She had looked and not seen; now she is named, and knowing floods back. Nothing changed in what stood before her. What changed was the teacher she listened to.

This is how the miracle works. It asks nothing of the eyes and everything of willingness to be known. When a mind hears itself called by love, the stranger becomes the beloved, and it answers with the trust of a student who has found again the one who can teach it truth.

Mary: the mind at the instant of recognition, turned at last from grief to the voice that knows it. Rabboni, Master: love acknowledged as the teacher, the one whose knowing restores what sorrow had hidden.

Live John 20:16 today

  1. Sometime today, sit with your phone face down and let yourself be addressed by something other than a notification. Just your own name, said kindly in your head, is enough to pull you out of the fog you woke up in.
  2. Use someone's actual name when you talk to them, the barista, your coworker, your kid, and slow down half a second when you say it. Watch how differently they stand there once they have been recognized.
  3. When grief or worry has you convinced nothing good is in the room, check who you have been listening to. Often the voice narrating your day is not the kindest one available, and you can change which one you believe.

Who has called you by name in a way you still carry?

Sufism · Rumi

The one you have been searching for all over the world is the one who is calling your name. The seeking ends the moment you hear who is speaking.

Zen

A student can stare at the master for years and see only an old man, until one word, spoken at the right moment, cracks the picture open. Nothing outside changed. The seeing changed.
