John 3:2 · World English Bible
The same came to him by night, and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”
The seeking mind first approaches the awakened self in darkness, its understanding still unlit, drawn to the inner teacher yet unable to see it in full day. Night is the state of a consciousness that senses the higher power without comprehending it, coming cautiously toward the light it recognizes but cannot yet stand within.

ESOTERIC
The seeking mind first approaches the awakened self in darkness, its understanding still unlit, drawn to the inner teacher yet unable to see it in full day. Night is the state of a consciousness that senses the higher power without comprehending it, coming cautiously toward the light it recognizes but cannot yet stand within. The one who arrives already grasps that such works flow only where the divine is present, which is the beginning of knowing that the same source could dwell in him.
Approaching by night is the intellect reaching for the awakened center while still ruled by its own dimness. The recognition is real but partial, and the whole story turns on that seeker moving from the darkness of the lower mind toward the day of the higher.
Night: the state of a mind that senses the higher power but cannot yet see it clearly, understanding still unlit. Teacher come from God: the awakened inner self that performs what the ordinary mind cannot, recognized before it is fully understood.
Esoteric lens
Where am I already sensing something true that I have not let myself see in full daylight?
The one who turns toward the light at first sees only shadows and glare. Partial seeing is still the beginning of seeing.
A student comes with a cup already full. What makes him a student is not his understanding but his willingness to arrive.
Your longing for the light is itself the light calling you. The wanting is the first sign that it is already near.
