John 4:31 · World English Bible
In the meanwhile, the disciples urged him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
The urging to eat is the ordinary faculties pressing the higher self to take in outer nourishment, mistaking the food of the flesh for the only sustenance there is, while the deeper self is already fed by an inner supply the physical mouth knows nothing of. The disciples are the trained powers of a person that still measure life by what the body consumes, and their concern is the mind's habit of reducing every need to a bodily one.

ESOTERIC
The urging to eat is the ordinary faculties pressing the higher self to take in outer nourishment, mistaking the food of the flesh for the only sustenance there is, while the deeper self is already fed by an inner supply the physical mouth knows nothing of. The disciples are the trained powers of a person that still measure life by what the body consumes, and their concern is the mind's habit of reducing every need to a bodily one. Eating here is the taking of material food to sustain the outer frame.
What unfolds is the gap between the nourishment the body demands and the hidden feeding that keeps the awakened self alive from within. The plain point is that the deepest part of a person draws its life from an inner source, so the outer appetite is not the whole account of what sustains someone.
Meat and eating: the material food of the flesh that the ordinary faculties press on the self, mistaking it for the only sustenance
Esoteric lens
What in you has been hungry for months while you kept feeding it lunch?
The sage is fed by something the senses cannot hand over, so a full stomach and an empty one look much the same from inside. What sustains is not what is swallowed.
The teaching speaks of four kinds of food, only one of which is edible. Contact, intention and awareness feed a person too, and most of what keeps someone alive never passes the lips.
The body asks for bread and gets it quickly. The part of you that actually runs your life is starved all day while everyone around you fusses about lunch.
