John 5:12 Meaning Then They Asked Him

Then they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your mat and walk’?”

What does John 5:12 mean?

Healing reached this man before he had any idea who gave it, and the men pressing him about the sabbath rule want a name he cannot give. God's help runs ahead of understanding; grace means help given free, before anyone has earned or grasped it.

Healing reached this man before he had any idea who gave it, and the men pressing him about the sabbath rule want a name he cannot give. God's help runs ahead of understanding; grace means help given free, before anyone has earned or grasped it.

Knowing the giver came later, and only because Christ went looking for him. What the man did with that knowledge afterward was clumsy, which is why conversion in the Church counts as something begun in a first meeting with Christ rather than completed there.

Live John 5:12 today

  1. Think back over the last few years and name one good thing you did not arrange: a job that came out of nowhere, a friend who stayed, a bad road you somehow did not take. Say thank you for it today, even late.
  2. When someone asks you to explain your faith and you fumble it, let yourself fumble. Not understanding something yet does not mean it is not happening to you.
  3. If you are being pressed today to have a clean answer, at work, in a group chat, at a family dinner, it is fine to say you do not know who or what to credit. Half-knowing is where most people actually live.

What good has already reached me that I have never managed to explain?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The water does not know it is carrying the boat. A great deal of what holds you up is working long before you can name it.

Sufism · Rumi

You were being pulled toward home before you knew the road had a name. The search was going on from the other end first.

Buddhism · Zen

Awakening is not the end of the road, it is the first honest step onto it. The clumsy years after are part of it too.
