John 6:28 Meaning They Said Therefore to Him

They said therefore to him, “What must we do, that we may work the works of God?”

What does John 6:28 mean?

The question assumes salvation is a matter of doing, of tasks performed to earn a distant reward. That assumption is the mistake.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The question assumes salvation is a matter of doing, of tasks performed to earn a distant reward. That assumption is the mistake. The work of God is not labor added to labor. It is a single inner act: the claiming of the desired state as already yours, now, without haggling over whether you deserve it.

God here is the awareness of being that draws every manifestation toward you, and its one work is belief. A person does the work by moving his attention from the state he has been living in to the state he wants, and resting there as in a finished thing. No striving completes it; striving only confesses it is not yet done. The world is consciousness pushed out, so it changes when the inner assumption changes, and not before. The one work asked of anyone is to assume the wish fulfilled and let it be so.

Live John 6:28 today

  1. Instead of making another plan for the thing you want, sit quietly for two minutes and let yourself feel what it is like to already have it. Then get on with your day and leave it there.
  2. With one person today, drop the effort to prove you are worth their time. Just be easy with them and let that be enough.
  3. When you feel the familiar push to hustle harder because nothing is moving, pause. That urgency is not progress, it is a confession that you do not yet believe it is handled.

What am I trying to earn that I could simply accept?

Tao Te Ching 48

The way is reached by letting go, not by piling on. Less doing, more arriving.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The anxious grasping after results is itself the obstacle. Act from a settled mind and the striving falls away as unnecessary.

Zen

Seeking enlightenment is like riding an ox to look for an ox. Stop earning what you already carry.
