John 6:46 Meaning Not That Anyone Has Seen the Father

Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father.

What does John 6:46 mean?

The Father is not an object anywhere outside a person to be looked upon; it is the unseen source of one's own being, and no eye of the flesh will ever fall on it because it is the very awareness doing the looking. Only that in a person which is already of the same nature as the source, the divine spark buried in the body, can know the source, because like knows like and only the light within perceives the light it came from.

Seeing the Father, then, is not a vision granted from far off but an inward recognition where the spark meets its origin. What religion imagines as a distant God to be glimpsed is the deep self a person carries, knowable only from inside and never from the outer senses.

The Father: the unseen source of one's own being, the origin that awareness cannot look upon because it is awareness itself He which is of God: the divine spark within the body, of the same nature as the source and therefore able to know it

Live John 6:46 today

  1. Sit still for three minutes and try to find the one who is sitting. The failure is the point, and it is a friendly kind of failure.
  2. When you love someone today, watch where the loving comes from instead of only where it lands. It did not start with a decision you made.
  3. Next time you want someone else to confirm you are okay, pause before you ask. See if you can find the ground under your own feet for one minute first, not to go it alone, just to know it is there.

Can you find the one who is looking, or only more looking?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

You cannot see the seer or know the knower, because that is the one doing the seeing. The eye will never look at itself.

Sufism · Rumi

What you are searching for has been doing the searching. The light you want to find is the thing making the looking possible.

Zen

It is like a sword trying to cut itself. Turn around fast enough and you only find the turning.
