John 6:45 Meaning It Is Written in the Prophets

It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who hears from the Father and has learned, comes to me.

What does John 6:45 mean?

ʿIlm ladunnī: Knowledge given straight from God The Quran names a knowing that comes from God's own presence rather than from study. Someone can explain a thing to you for years while you nod and nothing moves.

ʿIlm ladunnī: Knowledge given straight from God The Quran names a knowing that comes from God's own presence rather than from study. Someone can explain a thing to you for years while you nod and nothing moves. Then one ordinary day it lands, you know it in your bones, and you could not say who taught you.

Am I not your Lord? They said, Yes: every later hearing is a recognition The Quran tells of a moment before birth when God asked this and every soul answered. Sometimes you hear something for the first time and find yourself agreeing before you have worked out why. Sufis read that jolt as an old memory waking up, which is why hearing God feels closer to remembering than to getting news.

Everything has a polish, and the polish of hearts is the remembrance of God: the listener has to be clear A saying of the Prophet compares the heart to metal that dulls and needs cleaning. Two people sit through the same words, and one is changed while the other only finds something to argue with. The difference sits with the listener, under a film of grudges and self-importance, and that film can be worn away.

Dhawq: Tasting Sufis use tasting for knowledge that has passed through your own life. Al-Ghazali pointed out that a doctor can define health perfectly while lying sick in bed. Once someone has tasted, they stop asking for proof, and the thing they tasted becomes the plainest fact they own.

Jadhba: The pull from God Sufis use this word for the tug that moves a person toward God with no effort of their own. You can push yourself for years and stay dry, then get pulled a long way in one afternoon by something you did not arrange. They say a single pull like that outweighs everything people manage on their own steam, so arriving turns out to be mostly a matter of having been drawn.

Live John 6:45 today

  1. If something you read or heard this week landed oddly deep, sit with it for five minutes instead of looking for more content. The understanding wants time more than it wants material.
  2. When you explain something you care about and the other person does not get it, let it go without pressing. You brought them within reach, and the rest was never in your hands anyway.
  3. Before a hard conversation, put down the grudge you are carrying into it and the version of yourself you want to come out looking like. You will hear what is actually said a great deal better without those two.

What have you been told many times that you only recently understood?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

Nobody can hand you understanding; the teacher only points. What finally lands, lands in you, and you cannot say who put it there.

Upanishads

The truth is not won by argument or by a clever mind. It shows itself to the one who has grown quiet enough to receive it.

Buddhism

The Buddha compared listeners to three vessels: a pot turned upside down, a pot that spills what it holds, and one held open. The same words are poured, and only the open one keeps them.
